Bremen/Salzburg, July 22, 2026 – A strong signal for digital sovereignty in the DACH region: The Austrian RegTech company sproof and the German IT security specialist Governikus announce their strategic partnership. By deeply integrating the online ID function of the German national ID card—via the AusweisIDent solution—into the sproof Ident platform, the partners are significantly expanding the European eID network and offering companies an efficient alternative to outdated identification methods that works across national borders.

For regulated sectors such as financial services, energy utilities, telecommunications providers, transportation companies, and large online platforms, secure onboarding is increasingly becoming a business-critical challenge. This challenge is intensifying as European integration deepens, meaning companies need identity solutions that are interoperable across national borders. While traditional video identification procedures meet regulatory requirements, they burden companies with high transaction costs and lead to high abandonment rates in the sales process due to wait times and media breaks.

eID Use on the Rise: Faster, More Secure, and Suitable for Everyday Use

The partnership between Governikus and sproof brings the high level of trust associated with the government-issued online ID—via AusweisIDent—directly into the B2B processes of the private sector. Through sproof Ident, customers and clients can verify their identity in just a few seconds directly in the browser by scanning their smartphone. sproof Ident reads the verified attributes of the ID card—such as name, address, date of birth, and nationality—in a forgery-proof manner and provides an audit-proof audit trail for compliance checks.

“The German eID is the most secure identity foundation, and it’s already available on millions of smartphones in Germany today,” explains Hartje Bruns, CEO of Governikus. “Together with sproof, we’re making this government-issued technology suitable for everyday use in the business world. By integrating AusweisIDent into the sproof Ident solution, we’re reducing complexity and ensuring a user experience that builds trust rather than causing users to abandon the process.”

eID as a Direct Path to the European EUDI Wallet

This strategic partnership also serves as a response to the upcoming European regulations under eIDAS 2.0. Starting in 2027, numerous regulated industries and major online platforms will be legally required to accept the European digital wallet (EUDI Wallet) as a means of identification.

With the full integration of the German eID, sproof is paving the way for companies to make this transition from eID to the EUDI Wallet. Companies that implement eID authentication today are already using the technological architecture of the upcoming EUDI Wallet and will be ready to go on launch day with minimal development effort.

“The transition to the EUDI Wallet must not become a technological risk for companies,” emphasizes Dr. Clemens Brunner, CEO and co-founder of sproof. “Together with Governikus, we’re already building the bridge to the European wallet today. By expanding our eID network through AusweisIDent, we’re combining maximum compliance with a seamless onboarding process. This is digital sovereignty that doesn’t restrict companies but rather accelerates their growth.”
