sproof Launches EUDI Consortium for Business, Academia, and Government sproof, the Salzburg-based specialist in signature and identity verification, is forging a cross-regional alliance to implement eIDAS 2.0 in a practical manner. As Europe moves toward the mandatory introduction of digital wallets, the consortium is bringing together leading institutions—including A-Trust and PwC, as well as the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, Modul University, Paracelsus Medical Private University, LearnChamp, Salzburg AG, and Hilfswerk—to bring real-world use cases to market readiness before the EU-wide mandatory deadline.
Salzburg/Vienna, October 6, 2026 – What is the EUDI Wallet, what does eIDAS 2.0 mean, and why does all of Europe currently have such high hopes for this initiative? With the amended eIDAS 2.0 Regulation, the European Union is establishing a uniform, cross-border legal and technological foundation for the Digital Single Market. At its core is the so-called EUDI Wallet (European Digital Identity): a secure, government-recognized digital wallet on a smartphone.
By 2027, affected companies—ranging from financial institutions and telecommunications providers to universities and industrial firms—will be required to accept the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet as a means of identification and digital signature. To actively shape this transformation, the Salzburg-based RegTech company sproof has launched the “EUDI Consortium” (eudi-pioneers.eu). The initiative aims to foster a strategic alliance between business, academia, technology, and politics to accelerate the development of future-proof use cases and position the DACH region at the forefront of Europe’s identity infrastructure.
Legislation and Reality: Move Fast Instead of Waiting It Out
The current situation across the 27 EU member states is characterized by varying paces of progress: While some countries are pushing forward with the eIDAS roadmap at a brisk pace, others are still proceeding hesitantly. Austria has so far taken a wait-and-see approach at the federal level. In Germany, on the other hand, policymakers are picking up the pace: The parliamentary hearing on the new Digital Identities Act is scheduled for October 6; this law, as national framework legislation, will enshrine the eIDAS 2.0 requirements; the launch of the German EUDI wallet—d-you—is planned for January 2, 2027.
As part of the European trust infrastructure, sproof accepted an invitation from Digital Minister Dr. Karsten Wildberger to visit the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and State Modernization (BMDS) in Berlin, where sproof was confirmed as a selected technology and launch partner for the German EUDI Wallet initiative. This expertise is now being directly incorporated into the consortium to catapult Austria from the waiting list into the role of a first mover.
Far Beyond Standard Identification: Real-World Attributes for Everyday Work
To date, many organizations have reduced the wallet concept to a purely basic procedure: the legally required reading of personal identification data (PID) as a substitute for a digital ID. The consortium is deliberately focusing on a crucial aspect: the development of concrete, practical attribute use cases for day-to-day operations.
The focus is on testing standardized workflows for issuing and verifying digital credentials (Electronic Attestation of Attributes / EAA or QEAA). The spectrum ranges from forgery-proof employee ID cards and departmental credentials to industry-specific qualification and authorization certificates, as well as signing authorizations and training certificates. Through the consortium, companies and institutions learn how to issue reliable attributes themselves, retrieve them in internal and cross-organizational processes in a matter of seconds while minimizing data usage, and thus completely replace the manual submission of proof in day-to-day business operations.
sproof Credible as a platform that connects attributes and wallets
As the consortium’s initiator, sproof is introducing Credible, a new EUDI middleware product that serves as a unified interface to the wallets of the 27 EU member states. This allows partners to build on their existing systems without having to deal with the technical protocols in detail.
sproof covers the entire spectrum:
- Issuing Attributes: Institutions can issue tamper-proof digital credentials (Electronic Attestation of Attributes / EAA or QEAA)—such as employee ID cards, educational credentials, or signing authorizations—directly to their stakeholders’ wallets.
- Retrieve and verify attributes: Companies can retrieve authorizations, proof of age, or master data automatically, in a data-minimal manner, and in compliance with eIDAS.
- Legal & Technical Compliance: sproof handles the technical interfaces with regulatory authorities (such as RTR, A-SIT, and BKA) and qualified trust service providers (QTSPs) in a standardized manner.
A Strong Alliance
The consortium is supported by partners such as A-Trust and PwC: PwC, the leading auditing and consulting firm, assists the consortium with strategic issues, governance matters, and regulatory eIDAS 2.0 compliance. As a state-accredited trust service provider, A-Trust plays a key role in supporting the initiative by providing and securing qualified electronic attribute certificates (QEAA) with the highest level of security, as well as ensuring their seamless integration with ID Austria.
Opinions on the Initiative
Dr. Clemens Brunner, CEO and co-founder of sproof:
“The EUDI Wallet is the foundation for true digital sovereignty in Europe. Anyone who waits until the wallet becomes legally mandatory in 2027 is giving away crucial competitive advantages. Through the consortium, we’re contributing our technology platform so that companies and institutions can not only read predefined ID data but also issue and verify their own forgery-proof attributes and credentials in a legally compliant manner from day one. Our experience proves that the highest level of European legal validity, strict data protection, and an intuitive, accessible user experience are by no means mutually exclusive—they are interdependent.”
Prof. Mag. Dr. Dominik Engel, President of the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences:
“Together with sproof, we are one of the first universities in Europe to bring forgery-proof campus ID cards directly into the EUDI Wallet.”
Dr. Markus Vesely, CEO of A-Trust:
“By joining the EUDI Consortium, we are bringing our many years of experience as a qualified trust service provider to a strong European network. The EUDI Wallet will only inspire trust if it is built on a robust trust infrastructure. We intend to contribute to this effort together with sproof and our other partners.”
Enzo Orsi, Partner, PwC Austria:
“PwC Austria is pleased to be part of the EUDI consortium—an alliance of leading companies, technology providers, and regulatory authorities that are working together to shape Europe’s digital identity ecosystem under eIDAS 2.0. PwC brings its digital and technology expertise to the table and supports clients in integrating these solutions into their existing systems and processes. We look forward to shaping the future of digital identity in Europe together.”
Outlook: Sandbox Testing and Participation for Pioneering Companies
Over the coming months, the consortium partners will engage in structured in-depth sessions and define their industry-specific use cases. A total of five structured consortium meetings are scheduled through the end of 2026. In these working groups, the partners will define and refine their industry-specific use cases and clarify regulatory frameworks through direct dialogue.
Starting in the fall of 2026, participants will gain access to the sproof Credible Sandbox to test issuing and verification workflows in a live environment before the pilot projects are presented to the public and policymakers ahead of the legally mandated deadline.
The consortium is open to other organizations and companies from Austria that would like to contribute their perspectives and requirements. Through tiered partnership models, they can actively help shape the design of digital identities and gain practical experience early on.
